What is TMD?

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) refers to dysfunction of the jaw joint. Your temple (“tempero”) and lower jaw (“mandibular”) meet at a complex joint that connects your lower jaw to the base of your skull. TMD is a common disorder that affects jaw mobility and may cause pain throughout different areas of the face. Potential causes of TMD are grinding of the teeth, misaligned teeth, an injury to the jaw, or muscle tension from excessive clenching. TMD is sometimes hard to identify, so it is important to talk to one of our TMD dentists about your concerns.

Treatment typically begins with the most conservative option available, a dental occlusal splint or night guard. A night guard forms a protective barrier between your upper and lower jaw to assist in reprograming/relaxing muscles, reducing the amount of force you generate, and protecting your teeth from wear. We currently offer a convenient all digital workflow with in-house digital impressions and 3D printing for night guards.

Symptoms Of TMJ

Since there are five different muscles around the TMJ joint, TMJ pain can be felt in many places. You may not even realize you have TMD because of where your pain is located. Here are common symptoms of TMD to look out for:

  • Temporal headaches
  • Earaches
  • Trouble opening and closing the mouth
  • Clicking or popping of the jaw
  • Pain in the jaw muscles
  • Sore neck
